subtank keeps every version’s notes on subtank.dev.
Changelog.
Every release, newest first. Betas are labelled; a beta install follows betas, a stable one stays stable. Canto and Tulip also show What’s New after each update.
subtank keeps every version’s notes on subtank.dev.
Scoped Chat
- Chat with this folder — Right-click a folder, a tag, or a linked workspace folder to start a chat that stays inside it, or add it to the chat you already have open. Subfolders are included.
- Custom mixes — Combine folders, tags, projects, workspace folders, and specific notes in one scope, and exclude anything you don’t want in this conversation.
- Drop a folder on the chat — Drag a folder onto the Canto Chat composer to scope the conversation to it.
- Widen for this turn — Need the whole vault for one question? Widen once; the fence comes back on by itself, and that answer is marked as the exception.
- Research stays inside the fence — Research Mode follows the same scope for vault notes, workspace files, and past chats.
- Past chats and files — Choose whether this chat may search earlier conversations (Auto, Forced, Off, or only chats inside the scope), and whether it may read files attached to in-scope notes.
- Save it as a preset — A favorite chat setup can remember its scope, so the next conversation starts already pointed at the right place.
- You can see what was used — After an answer, the context receipt names the scope, how many notes it covered, and whether that turn was widened.

Local model
- Qwen 3.8 27B replaces Qwen 3.6 27B. If you were using the older 27B model, Canto switches you over automatically.
- Turbo is built in — turning on the faster engine no longer needs a second download.
Safer vault
- Apple Notes refresh keeps a copy of your current version before applying an incoming change. If it can’t, that note is skipped instead of overwritten.
- Sync does the same for changes arriving from another device.
- Backups stay in their own lane — if two vaults share a backup folder, one no longer cleans up the other’s snapshots.
- Program-like attachments open in Finder instead of running.
- Scoped chats stay private from outside apps that read your chats through Canto.
Also in this release
- Hide the scope banner in Settings → Chat if you’d rather keep the transcript clean. The scope still applies.
- If a scope points at nothing (for example a folder you deleted), Canto says so instead of quietly searching the whole vault.

Publishing
- Publish any note. Publishing is no longer limited to research notes — any note in your vault can become a shareable link.
- Private sources stay private. References to your own notes, chats, attachments, and local files are now removed from the published copy instead of appearing as links that lead nowhere. The web sources that remain are renumbered from 1 with no gaps.
- Honest source counts. A research note's cover count is rewritten to match what's actually published, and the publish preview tells you how many private sources were left behind before you confirm.
- Readable code. Published code blocks wrap long lines instead of hiding them behind a horizontal scroll bar, and each block now shows line numbers and a small language label.
- One title, not two. A long note title that was shortened along the way no longer appears a second time beneath the cover.
- Better pages for notes without a cover. The first line becomes a proper title heading, styled the way Canto styles it in the editor, with your tag chips sitting just below it.
- Cleaner contents lists. The table of contents no longer sprouts stray bullet points.
- Diagrams survive the trip. Flow diagrams render correctly on published pages instead of arriving stripped of their shapes.
- Copy link works. The Copy link button in the publish window and in Settings → Publishing could silently fail; both are fixed.
- Notes you already shared are fixed too. Pages you published before this release pick up these improvements automatically — no need to republish.
- A cleaner Published tab. The list of your published notes on the web was redesigned to be easier to scan and manage.

Free AI queries
- Charged when work begins. A free query is spent when the model actually starts generating, not the moment you press send.
- Nothing lost to a false start. Cancel a turn, or hit a problem before generation starts, and your query is returned.
- Counted once, everywhere. Canto Chat, Document Chat, and Vault Manager all follow the same rule, and editing a message to resend it or regenerating an answer now counts like any other turn.
- A number you can trust. Some turns in 0.10.0 finished without counting at all, so the remaining count could drift. It now reflects what you've really used.
Fixes
- Truthful AI status. With the local model turned off and a chat pointed at an external or cloud model, the sidebar read "AI Off" even while the chat was working. It now shows External AI Ready, Cloud AI Ready, or Generating… along with the model's name.
- Clearer publish preview. The summary of what's excluded now states plainly that private notes, chats, and local files are removed.

✦ Canto Sparks — one discovery a day, from your own notes
- Five kinds of discovery — something you wrote on this day in an earlier year, a forgotten note others link to, two notes that clearly belong together but were never linked, an open loop you left unfinished, or a note your past self sealed for today
- One-click actions — open the note, open both, Link them (with a preview before anything is written), Write beside it, or Mark resolved
- Always explainable — Ask why tells you exactly why that note surfaced
- It finds you gently — on the Welcome screen, in the macOS menu bar, and as
a
{{spark}}line in your daily-note template - Tomorrow's teaser — once you've seen today's, Canto hints at what's coming
- While you were away — return after a break and Canto picks up where you left off, without guilt-tripping
- Time capsules — right-click any note to seal it for a future date
- New slash commands —
/random,/surprise, and/timecapsule - Fully tunable — Settings → Notes → Canto Sparks lets you switch off individual discovery types or surfaces, and reset anything you've dismissed

🌐 Publish a note to the web
- Unlisted by default — not indexed by search engines; only people you send the link to will find it
- Looks like your note — images, math, diagrams, charts, references, and the evidence ledger all come across
- You see what's included — Canto summarizes exactly what's going out, and what's being left behind, before you publish
- Snapshots, not live editing — later edits stay private until you choose Update published version
- Unpublish anytime — one click takes the page down
- Publish from anywhere — the note's status bar, the command palette (Publish note to web…), or Settings → Publishing
- Manage what's live — Settings → Publishing lists everything you've published with view counts and one-click unpublish
🍎 Apple Notes import (macOS)
- You choose the scope — browse and search your accounts and folders, tick only what you want
- Preview before you commit — see how many notes, folders, locked notes, and attachments are involved before a single note is created
- Formatting survives — rich text, lists, tables, and images arrive as real Canto content, with attachments if you want them
- Refresh later — pull in changes you've made in Apple Notes since the import without redoing everything
- Conflicts are reviewed, never overwritten — if you edited a note in both places, Canto keeps your version and hands you a review list
- Resumable — a long import that gets interrupted picks up where it stopped
🧠 "Remember this" — memory you approve
- Capture in one click — hover any chat message and choose Remember; save a decision, commitment, preference, project fact, open question, or correction
- Scoped the way you work — keep something personal, or attach it to a single Project so it only applies there
- See when it's used — remembered items appear in the chat's context receipt, so you know what shaped an answer
- Easy to undo — open the source, forget it, mark it resolved, or replace it with a newer version
- One place to review — the Continuity Ledger tab lists everything Canto knows, filterable by scope and type
- Optional suggestions — off by default; when enabled, Canto proposes things worth remembering after a conversation using only your on-device model, and every suggestion waits for you to keep, edit, or dismiss it
🗑️ Cleanup you can trust
- Delete folders and files together — select a mix in the sidebar and remove them in one action
- Exact counts first — the confirmation shows precisely how many folders, notes, notebooks, and canvases are involved, including everything nested inside
- All or nothing — the delete either completes fully or leaves your vault untouched; no half-finished cleanups
- Catches late changes — if the folder tree changes while the dialog is open, Canto asks you to re-review the updated numbers
- Smarter Trash restore — restoring an item whose original folder is gone now puts it in the nearest surviving folder
🔋 The free AI budget now refills
- 25 queries to start, then 5 more every week — free, forever
- Honest countdowns — budget pills read "refills in 2d" instead of looking like a dead end
- Consistent everywhere — Welcome, Canto Chat, and Document Chat all show the same remaining count and refill time
🛠️ Improvements and fixes
- Connected tools stay connected — Canto's link for outside apps now heals itself after sleep, unlock, or a temporary network hiccup
- Honest connection status — see whether it's starting, running, or retrying, with a Restart now button when you want to force it
- Corrected setup snippets — copy-paste configurations for popular external tools were refreshed to match their current formats
- Sturdier Settings — if one settings panel runs into trouble, the rest of the window keeps working instead of going blank
- Faster settings navigation — jump straight to Import & Connections from the command palette
- Cleaner Projects setup — the project editor's folder picker is more compact and searchable, and closes with the keyboard
- Lighter on memory — fixed a leak in the background memory monitor
- Steadier editor — improved stability when switching between notes
- Safer folder moves — moving items between folders is handled more reliably

Let multiple chats keep moving
- Start a new chat without cancelling work already underway in another one.
- Each chat keeps its own research progress, questions, approvals, saved work, and Stop button.
- See which chats are replying, researching, waiting for you, saving, or waiting their turn.
- Keep an answer consistent while it is being written, even if you change your preferred AI settings elsewhere.
- When your Mac needs to handle one demanding task at a time, Canto queues the rest clearly instead of letting work collide.
Resume long research instead of starting over
- Build chapter-by-chapter research as a progressive draft.
- Open completed sections while the rest of the project is still underway.
- Resume an interrupted or oversized project from where it stopped.
- Keep completed chapters when a task reaches its limit instead of losing the work.
- See clearer progress that identifies the current chapter or section.
- Preview the likely size and shape of a large research project before starting.
More focused document research
- Choose the main document when working with several attachments.
- Research a specific chapter or section with tighter focus.
- Match citations more easily to the printed page numbers in your document.
- Continue a research thread in a fresh, lighter chat while keeping the relevant sources and focus.
- Save successful research setups as reusable shortcuts.
- Use new guided shortcuts:
/chapter-study/source-critique/literature-follow-up
- Start relevant research shortcuts from the welcome screen as well as existing chats.
Clearer, more dependable sessions
- Wait for attachments and their references to be ready before research begins.
- Keep progress, source guidance, and recovery choices attached to the correct chat.
- Avoid confusing recovery messages after a successful answer.
- Better recognize naturally finished answers in Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and other languages.
- Explain more clearly whether a task was interrupted, too large to finish in one response, or needs fewer sources.
- Make research dialogs easier to use with a keyboard, including Escape to close them.
- Keep active chats smoother and more stable when your Mac is also handling voice, images, indexing, or Memory Links.
