🐧 oMLX support, built in
One-click setup — pick oMLX from a dedicated option when you add a connection, and Canto fills in the right address for you. No more wiring it up through a generic "OpenAI-compatible" workaround.
It just works — Canto speaks oMLX's language natively, including how it loads models on demand and frees up memory when it's done.
Made for your Mac — oMLX is tuned for Apple Silicon, so you get fast, fully on-device answers without anything leaving your computer.

💭 Watch your model think
See the reasoning unfold — models that "think" before they answer now stream that step-by-step reasoning into Canto as it happens.
Cleanly separated — the thinking is tucked into its own collapsible block, so your final answer stays clean and easy to read.
📏 Context sizes you can trust
Real numbers, not a placeholder — local connections no longer show a misleading "256K". Canto discovers a model's actual limit where it can, and falls back to a sensible value otherwise.
Set it exactly — a handy preset picker lets you tell Canto a model's true window in a couple of clicks, and the context meter updates instantly.
The meter finally agrees — the "how full is the model" bar now reflects your real limit, so warnings and auto-compaction kick in at the right time.
Your settings stick — a context size you set by hand is remembered and survives refreshing your list of models.
🛠️ Smarter tool detection
A fair test — Canto now gently warms a model up before checking whether it can use tools (reading notes, searching the web, editing documents), so big models aren't penalized for being slow to load.
More patience for heavy models — the check waits longer for large local models, so a capable 9B model is recognized just like a quick 4B one.
Have the final say — if the automatic check ever gets it wrong, you can switch tool support on or off for any model yourself.
🎯 Friendlier limits & refinements
Plain-language memory warnings — if a local model runs short on memory mid-request, Canto explains what happened and suggests how to fix it, instead of showing a cryptic error.
Cleaner structured replies — oMLX models now return tidy, well-formed results when Canto asks for structured output.
A real, accurate context meter. Canto now shows precisely how full the model's "memory" is right now, instead of a rough guess.
A clear breakdown. See how much space your notes, your vault, web research, tools, and the conversation itself are each using.
Session at a glance. A running tally shows how much work a chat has done, including the hidden passes Canto runs for research.
No more surprises. You can see when a chat is filling up and act early, instead of it mysteriously slowing down or forgetting things.

♻️ Long chats that never hit a wall
Auto-compaction. When a chat starts to fill up, Canto quietly summarizes the older turns into a short recap and keeps the recent ones word-for-word — so you can keep going without losing the thread.
Recent turns stay exact. Your latest messages are always kept verbatim, never summarized.
"Compact now" button. Reclaim space yourself anytime, right from the context meter.
Tune it your way. New Agent settings let you choose how soon it kicks in, how many recent turns to always keep, who writes the recap, and whether to get a gentle heads-up when it happens.
Works everywhere. Applies to Canto Chat, the Document Agent, and Vault Chat.
📊 Diagrams you can actually explore
Pan, zoom, and go fullscreen. Get in close on a complex diagram or open it full-screen to study the whole thing.
Captions. Diagrams can carry a short title so you know what you're looking at.
One-click repair. If a diagram comes out broken, a "fix" action asks Canto to mend it — and you can watch it work.
Edit it yourself. A split-view editor lets you tweak a diagram by hand.
Smoother while streaming. Diagrams now settle into place cleanly as a reply comes in, instead of flickering or grabbing your scroll.
🛤️ Vault Manager shows its work
Live timeline. Vault Manager now reports what it's doing step by step — matching the look of Canto Chat and the Agent Panel — instead of a single vague status line.
Grouped results. Drafted changes are tallied together, and anything skipped (duplicates, limits, or errors) is shown plainly.
Peek at its thinking. Expandable thought traces let you follow its reasoning when you want to.
Nothing hidden. If a run stops early for any reason, it tells you why.
🎯 Calmer, steadier research notes
One health indicator. Ledger problems, uncitable claims, and weakly-supported claims now live in a single tidy popover next to the note title, instead of scattered banners.
Citations that survive follow-ups. Ask a research note a follow-up question and its citation numbers keep resolving correctly across turns.
Honest saves. Saving a research note always keeps the full draft and clearly flags anything that got trimmed or dropped, rather than quietly swapping in a shorter answer.
Sturdier evidence ledger. The claims-and-sources table is more reliable to build, and claims trace back to the sources you actually see cited.
🛠️ Smaller fixes & refinements
Roomier chat layout. The Canto Chat split and editor minimum width were retuned so narrow side-by-side layouts stay comfortable to work in.
Clearer embedding status. The background indexing indicator now names the note or link it's currently working on.
Protected note metadata. Research notes are better guarded against accidentally losing their title or misplacing the tag row while you edit.
Tidier numbers and tables. Context-window sizes display as clean round values, and currency symbols in tables are no longer mistaken for math.
Added Inbox Mode presets for common organizing tasks like finding related notes, citing sources, summarizing into a new note, filing notes, adding tags, and finding connections.
Improved the experience while Canto is preparing organizer suggestions, with clearer “reading sources” and “organizing” progress states.
Added receipts after organizer runs so you can see what changed, what was skipped, and what still needs attention.
Improved follow-up research loading states so longer follow-up work feels less stuck.
Follow-up research can now draw from a broader set of relevant material.
Created notes and notebooks keep cleaner, more consistent references and source links.

Improved source handling for Inbox Mode and created notes.
Improved manual rebuild behavior for Memory Links.
Made follow-up research feel more responsive.
Added general polish around chat, Library preparation, Memory Links, and voice settings.
Live drafting preview — when Canto Chat creates a note, watch it stream into view in real time, fully formatted, before you approve it.
Approve right where it appears — create approvals now show up inline in the conversation with clear approve/reject actions.
Rich content, rendered — equations and Mermaid diagrams display properly in both the preview and the finished note.
Cleaner titles — a heading at the top of a reply is no longer duplicated into the note's body when you save it.

🤝 Keep Going in the Document Agent
A friendly handoff strip — after Canto Chat creates or opens a note, a dismissible prompt offers to continue in that note's docked Agent Chat.
Animated, not jarring — moving from the chat home into a note-and-agent layout now glides instead of snapping.
Chat can read the open document — when chatting beside a note or notebook, Canto Chat can read and cite the document open next to it.
Clear web boundaries — if you ask something that needs the web while web access is off, Canto tells you plainly instead of quietly coming up short.
☁️ iCloud Sync, Rebuilt for Real Time
Real-time updates — changes now stream between your Macs promptly instead of waiting on slow background passes.
One simple switch — turning on iCloud Drive Sync is all it takes; the faster engine activates automatically.
Your whole vault stays in sync — no more picking which folders to sync; everything is kept together by default.
Trustworthy cloud badges — the cloud icons next to your notes now reliably reflect what's safely backed up, including notes restored on a new Mac.
The sidebar keeps up — when a change arrives from another Mac, your sidebar and file tree refresh on their own instead of showing stale rows.
🩺 Calmer Sync Settings, With Real Repair Tools
A clear status strip — one compact line tells you what sync is doing, instead of a wall of technical toggles.
Sync Doctor — a one-tap, non-destructive repair that re-checks your vault against the cloud and recovers anything missing.
Re-join from iCloud — a second Mac can cleanly join the shared vault already in your iCloud instead of starting a separate one.
Clean-slate reset — a clearly labeled reset wipes the cloud and local sync state for a fresh start, with a separate hard reset when you want everything cleared.
Quieter syncing indicator — the "Syncing…" spinner now appears for real work, not every routine background check.
🏷️ Smarter Chat Titles Without the Wait
An optional tiny helper — download a small on-device model just for naming chats, from Settings → AI Models.
Never blocks your main model — it loads, names the chat, and unloads on its own.
Graceful fallback — without it, Canto still gives your chats sensible titles automatically.
⚡ Better Local Models
Higher-quality downloads — local models now use newer, better-tuned versions for cleaner output.
Tuned for GLM Flash — the GLM model now runs with sampling settings matched to its recommended defaults.
Accurate download states — the model picker and settings track downloads live and stop showing stale "loading" or "downloading" states once a model is ready.
Steadier on tighter memory — a couple of models had their settings adjusted to match what runs reliably in practice.
🧮 Turn Plain Text Into Real Equations
Conversion requests understood — phrases like "convert this to an equation" are recognized as real edit requests.
Lands as real math — the result is an editable, rendered math block, not flattened plain text.
🛠️ Smaller Fixes & Refinements
Notes remember your place — switching note tabs restores your cursor and scroll position instead of resetting to the top.
Tidier status bar in narrow panes — in split-pane layouts the footer stays on a single row, switching to compact icons instead of wrapping.
Copy Mermaid errors — when a diagram fails to render, you can copy the error text in one click from both the editor and Agent Chat.
Cleaner agent activity rail — nested timeline steps line up neatly and the live edit preview is easier to read.
Bigger vault tidy-ups — the AI Vault organizer can reorganize large vaults in one pass, with a dedicated panel for reviewing and approving the plan.
Latest building blocks — the editor, app runtime, and build tooling were updated to their newest stable versions for better reliability.
