    ✨ New

    Canto Chat — a chat-first home

    • The welcome screen has been rebuilt around a centered chat composer. Type a question and Canto opens a real chat session — no stray panes, no forced document, no scaffolding to clean up.
    • Pick your model and scope (All notes, current note, or the open web) right from the composer.
    • Recent chats and recent notes share the same lane, so jumping back into yesterday's thread is one click.
    • Closing every tab returns you to the welcome shell instead of force-opening a random note.

Searchable chat history in the sidebar

    • Every chat session lives alongside notes in the main sidebar — no separate panel to find.
    • Full-text search across past transcripts: titles, previews, and full message bodies.
    • Pin important threads to the top, rename them inline, edit any past message and regenerate every reply that came after.
    • Trash lifecycle for chats — preview deleted chats read-only, restore them, or empty Trash to permanently remove.
    • Smarter background-generated titles after the first turn (without ever blocking your reply).
    • Save as note or notebook — turn any assistant reply into a markdown note or runnable notebook in one click, with attachments preserved.

    Real grounding with real citations

    • Vault scope — point chat at All notes or just the current note; Canto pulls relevant snippets through a search-then-read flow with explicit [1], [2] markers that link back to the source.
    • Web Search mode — quick search and URL extraction, with a Sources tray you can open and close.
    • Web Research mode — a heavier mode that can map a site and crawl across pages, behind a one-tap approval before anything is fetched.
    • Receipts on every assistant reply — open the receipts panel to inspect exactly which notes, pages, and URLs were consulted.
    • Citations stay clickable — vault citations open the source note, web citations open the page.

    Durable attachments in chat

    • Drop PDFs, text, images, audio, or video into a chat. Files are stored in your vault, not just held in memory, so they survive a full app restart.
    • PDFs / text — extracted, chunked, embedded, and cited by page.
    • Audio / video — transcribed on-device with Whisper and cited with timestamps.
    • Images — described and indexed for retrieval.
    • Embedding work runs through a persistent queue and picks up where it left off after a relaunch.
    • Retry, cancel, and progress for every attachment, right in the composer.

    Direct local vision

    • If your local model is vision-capable, attached images are sent directly to it so the model can actually see them — not just read a transcript of what they contained.

    Shared Library tab

    • A new Library lane in the sidebar collects every asset attached to a chat or a note in one searchable place.
    • Both Canto Chat and the document Agent Panel can list, read, and reattach Library items, so you never have to upload the same brief twice.
    • The same file in three places only takes up one copy on disk (content-hash deduplication).
    • Saving a chat to a note carries its sources along.

Note edits hand off to the Agent Panel

    • Canto Chat itself never silently rewrites your notes.
    • When you ask for an edit, it opens that note's docked Agent Panel with a tailored prompt drafted in the composer, ready for you to review and send.
    • Canto Chat can run beside an editor pane with a resizable splitter, so you can converse and edit at the same time.

    Dictation on the home composer

    • The microphone button now lives on the welcome composer and the in-session Canto Chat composer, sharing the same fast on-device dictation engine the document Agent Panel already uses.
    • Voice never leaves your Mac.

    🔄 Improved

    A quieter shell

    • Floating update pills — update prompts no longer push your editor down with a full-width banner; they float as a compact pill below the tab bar.
    • What's New, in the editor — release notes now open as a clean read-only header on a real document instead of a modal-feeling banner.
    • Simpler memory status pill — a single CPU icon plus a resident-RAM number, easier to read at a glance.
    • Refreshed macOS app icon for a cleaner look in Dock, Finder, and Spotlight.
    • Traffic-light-safe drag regions on the home screen — moving the window no longer activates composer controls by accident.

    Document Agent Panel parity

    • The docked Agent Panel got a UI refresh to align with Canto Chat.
    • It now shares the new Library tooling for listing, reading, and attaching assets.
    • The smooth streaming "typewriter" reveal that made the Agent Panel feel snappy is now shared with Canto Chat assistant messages.

    Polished chat output

    • Assistant tables now render with the same restrained styling Canto uses everywhere else.
    • Citation tooltips no longer cover up nearby text.
    • Citation markers no longer collide with [[wikilink]] syntax.

    🔒 Pro Trial

    • Vault context and web search are now Pro features — free users see a clear lock with a single nudge to upgrade, instead of silent failures or empty answers.
    • One free Pro-flavored query per send is enforced server-side; legacy trial counters now align to a clean 25-query baseline.
    • Basic on-device chat without grounding stays unlimited and free.

    🐛 Fixes

    • Stop button actually stops — pressing Stop now cleanly cancels both agent and plain chat turns mid-stream.
    • Hardened external model switching — switching between local and external models mid-session no longer wedges the chat or strands a half-finished reply.
    • Stable per-turn citation markers — tool results now carry consistent citation IDs across a turn, so [1] always means the same thing.
    • Vision context sized correctly — multi-frame video inference no longer overflows the model's context window when batches stack up.
    • Save-as-note now renders real markdown HTML instead of raw text.

    A Refreshed Local Model Catalog

The on-device model lineup has been rebuilt from the ground up using Unsloth-hosted builds — higher-quality versions of every size class.

    • Granite is the new default for on-device chat, with its own provider icon in the model picker.
    • GPT-OSS 120B is now available as a heavyweight option for users with the hardware to run it.
    • Shard-aware downloads — large multi-file models download in parallel and resume cleanly if you cancel.
    • Your old picks survive — if you previously selected a model that's no longer in the catalog, Canto silently maps it to the closest current build.
    • Goodbye, drafter — the experimental "draft decoding" setup has been retired. The new catalog is faster end-to-end without it, and that's one less knob in Settings.

    Cold-Start Local Models

Canto no longer eagerly loads your local model the moment the app opens.

    • Faster launches — startup no longer pays the cost of mapping gigabytes of weights.
    • Lower idle memory — a session where you only read or write notes never pays the AI footprint at all.
    • Warming, surfaced clearly — when you do send the first prompt, Agent Chat shows a brief warming status before the response begins.
    • Adopts already-loaded models — if the runtime is warm from another flow, the agent reuses it instantly instead of reloading.

    Send Diagnostics

A new Send Diagnostics option in the Help menu and on Settings → About makes it easy to report a bug without exposing your notes.

    • Full preview before sending — the entire support bundle is shown to you as JSON, with secrets and personal content scrubbed out.
    • Pick what to include — toggle whether to attach a screenshot, recent crash metadata, memory state, update state, and database health info.
    • Save locally or upload — save a copy to disk for your own records, or post it directly to LonelyDuck.
    • Crash-aware — if a window or helper process crashes, that event is captured locally so the next diagnostics report has the right context.

    Long Conversations Stay Snappy

Big tool results — web research, large file reads, multi-page extracts — used to live in memory for the whole session. They now offload to disk, so chats stay light no matter how long they get.

    • Big tool results stored on disk as artifacts in your vault, with a compact summary kept in the chat itself.
    • Cached token estimates — the context-usage indicator no longer re-tokenizes everything on every render.
    • Reclaim now — a new manual button in Settings → Memory drops idle weights and frees RAM on demand, no restart needed.
    • Smarter idle eviction — when Canto unloads an unused model, it now runs a deeper cleanup pass so RAM actually goes back where it belongs.

    A Self-Healing Vault

The Memory Links sidecar database (the engine behind Related Notes and semantic search) is now resilient to corruption, and your main vault file actively reclaims unused space.

    • Auto-rebuilds a broken index — if the embedding sidecar can't be opened, Canto quietly quarantines the bad files and starts a fresh index instead of refusing to launch.
    • One-shot compaction at launch — when your vault has accumulated significant unused space, Canto compacts it on startup so the file shrinks back down on disk.
    • No more index bloat — semantic-search tables are rebuilt cleanly each launch instead of growing indefinitely from background indexing.
    • Separate dev and production indexes — development builds use their own sidecar file, so testing never collides with your real vault.

    Friendlier Embedding Status

The status-bar pill and Memory Links inspector are much better at explaining which part of indexing needs attention.

    • Notes vs. links called out separately — error states say things like "links are stuck on a fetch" or "notes need a rebuild" instead of a generic "needs attention."
    • Active phases win — if links are actively being fetched or embedded, the pill stays in its working state instead of being overridden by stale errors.
    • Real error messages bubble up — the inspector shows a short, truncated reason for the failure right in the lane header.

    Web Search, Off Means Off

If you haven't set up a Tavily API key, web research tools used to still appear and fail confusingly. Now it's clean either way.

    • Tools hidden when not configured — without a key, all web research tools (search, extract, map, crawl, research, fetch URL) are completely removed from the agent's toolbox.
    • Friendly nudge in chat — if your message is clearly asking for research, the agent replies with a short note and a shortcut to Settings → Web Search.
    • Polished warning panel — the missing-key banner in Agent Chat has been redesigned to match the rest of the modern chat surface.

The Local Agent Bails Out Instead of Spinning

Occasionally a local model produces a malformed tool reply. Older builds would let the agent keep retrying until the watchdog tripped — 0.7.9 catches the pattern and ends the run cleanly with an explanation.

    • Repeat-failure guard — when the same kind of tool failure happens twice in a row, the agent stops and explains rather than looping.
    • Clearer tool-error summaries — common validation problems now produce short, agent-readable messages so the model can self-correct on its next turn.
    • Cleaner streaming output — internal scaffolding leaked into the streaming preview is stripped more aggressively, so what you see really is what lands in your note.
    • Citations done right — the agent now writes [1]-style numeric citations instead of accidentally writing them as [[1]] wikilinks that point nowhere.

    Under the Hood

    • Unsloth-aware load planner — the local model loader understands sharded files, normalizes legacy IDs, and persists your effective selection so it survives migrations.
    • Lifecycle-synced runtime — Agent Chat, Settings, and the memory inspector all stay in sync when the main process loads, sleeps, or evicts a model behind the scenes.
    • Pressure-aware idle timers — outside Low Memory Mode, the idle-unload window now adapts to current memory pressure rather than using a single hard-coded value.
    • Effective-settings caveats — if your saved weight-pinning options diverge from what's actually live in the runtime, the Memory panel flags it and prompts a quick reload.
    • Lower baseline RAM — the embeddings model now idle-unloads after a quiet window even outside Low Memory Mode, and re-warms automatically on the next embed.

    Improvements

    • Cooperative scheduling for embeddings — embedding work yields to typing and to AI generation, then resumes when things go idle.
    • Faster bulk saves — when a note's embeddings are refreshed, they're written in a single transaction instead of one row at a time.
    • Encrypted embedding index — the new background index lives in its own encrypted SQLite file, with the same protection as your notes.
    • Re-anchored similarity badges — the "Related" / "Weak" badges in the sidebar were re-tuned against the new 55% floor, so they actually mean what they say.
    • Sidebar "catching up…" hint — Related Notes briefly holds off while the current note is still indexing, so you don't see stale matches mid-rebuild.
    • Indexed similarity search — Related Notes now prefers the new fast indexed path when available, with a transparent fallback for older bridges.

    Fixes

    • Long agent turns and heavy tool work no longer get prematurely aborted by the watchdog.
    • The local AI no longer errors out when its runtime is disposed mid-turn — it now rewarms cleanly.
    • Web search favicons no longer break or get blocked by Canto's stricter security headers.
    • Rapid edits to the same note no longer kick off duplicate or overlapping embed jobs.
    • New web tools (Extract, Map, Crawl, Research) are properly approval-gated, just like web search and URL fetching.

⚡ A faster agent on notes

    • The agent no longer runs a separate "what do you want me to do?" step before starting on a note. Turns begin sooner — especially the first message in a conversation.
    • Web search is always available when you've set it up — no more second-guessing whether your message "counts" as a search request.
    • Long tool steps (like web searches and link reads) now count as activity, so the streaming indicator won't falsely think the agent has stalled.

    🧠 One place for Memory

    • Memory Links and Link Indexing are merged into a single Memory tab in Settings.

    🪟 Settings, unified

    • Floating glass cards are now used consistently across AI Models, Commands, Voice, MCP Servers, Image & Video, Web Search, and Memory.
    • Every panel leads with the same quiet subtitle style under its title.

    ⬇️ Updates remember your preference

    • Your "Download updates automatically" choice is now properly saved and reapplied on every launch.

    🪟 Sidebar polish

    • The sidebar "island" picks up its own background, border, and hover colors — child panels like Related Notes inherit the lifted look instead of clashing with hardcoded grays.
    • Elevation and tinting adapt to both light and dark palettes.
    Read all the notes

    👋 Welcome screen

    • Recent note rows use your theme's text, surface, and border colors instead of fixed grays.
    • The New Note / New Notebook / Open Vault tiles glow with your accent color on hover.
    • Keyboard shortcut hints sit on the same elevated surface as the rest of the panel, in any palette you pick.

    🅰️ Editor & chat typography

    • Shared headings, lists, and blockquotes between notes and the agent panel.
    • Calmer code blocks — inline code, fenced blocks, and tables get matching treatment in notes and chat, with a refined look in dark mode.
    • Smoother streaming entrance — assistant responses slide in with a soft animation that fully respects macOS Reduce Motion.

    📂 File tree

    • Right-aligned metadata column for folder counts and note timestamps.
    • Pin and delete hover actions clustered together on the same edge.
    • Dense mode can now show a touch of preview metadata where it makes sense.
    • Refined Pinned and Private section headings with quieter labels and counts.

    🧮 Currency vs. math

    • Smarter detection so $…$ is only treated as a math equation when it actually looks like LaTeX.
    • The same guard now applies in the editor, in agent chat, in notebook markdown cells, and in note & notebook history previews.
    • Real equations still render as before.

    🤝 Agent approvals

    • One approval per turn — once you say yes to remote content, the agent won't ask again for the rest of that conversation turn.
    • The activity rail clearly shows read tools as in-progress instead of looking idle.

    🐛 Fixes

    • Opening the What's New release notes tab no longer triggers Memory Links errors in the background while the embedding model is still loading.
    • Memory Links and Backlinks panels now stay quiet on non-note tabs (release notes, the graph, the vault manager) instead of trying to find related notes for them.
    • The embedding model now properly waits for an in-progress load to finish, so features that depend on it never run too early on launch.

    ✨ New

    • Watch the agent write, live. When the agent rewrites part of a note, the new text now streams into the chat in real time so you can read along instead of waiting for a wall of text to appear at the end.
    • A friendlier activity timeline. Searches, reads, previews, and renames in the agent panel now read like plain English — e.g. "Renamed Old Title → New Title" and "Searched your vault for weekly review" with the matching notes listed below.
    • Sidebar settings tab. A dedicated Sidebar tab in Settings lets you adjust list density and how the Private list behaves.
    • Memory, simplified. The Memory window now offers one clear choice: Adaptive (Canto picks the best context size for your Mac) or Manual (you set it). The old "Higher Context Mode" toggle is gone.

    💅 Improved

    • Smoother streaming. Incoming text gently fades in character-by-character with a small catch-up so fast bursts still feel responsive. Fully respects macOS Reduce Motion.
    • Calmer panel motion. New chat rows and timeline entries glide in with a soft entrance instead of snapping.
    • Auto-scroll keeps up. Long live previews keep the conversation pinned to the bottom without yanking you around mid-read.
    • Multi-step edits, clearer. When the agent applies several edits in one turn, each one shows up as its own card with a clear drafting → applying → done state, indented neatly under the parent step.
    • Faster link previews. Canto can now fetch up to four link previews at once on a dedicated background thread, so a clipboard full of URLs no longer slows the app down.
    • Lighter background work. Background indexing now touches only the links that actually need a preview instead of re-scanning every note, and briefly steps aside while you're typing so the editor stays snappy.
    • Honors your link auto-fetch setting. If you've turned auto-fetch off, the background catch-up loop now stays off too.
    • Pre-selected new-note title. Open a fresh note and the placeholder title is already highlighted — just start typing.
    • Esc closes history modals. Both the note and notebook version-history windows now dismiss with Esc, like the rest of the app.
    • Clearer Memory copy. The context-size tooltip and helper text explain each mode in plain language.

    🐛 Fixed

    • No more false "model stuck" warnings. When an agent step is waiting on you (an approval or review), Canto no longer treats that pause as the model being frozen.
    • Sturdier tag sync. When two devices add the same tag at the same time, Canto now merges them cleanly instead of leaving duplicates behind.
    • Renames into empty notes. Renaming a note whose body starts blank now correctly syncs the new title into the first line.

    ✨ New

    • Drag Markdown files into Canto. Drop one or many .md files onto the sidebar and Canto turns them into real notes — into Overview, into your Vault, or directly inside a folder. Multiple files are imported in one pass, and a highlight shows you exactly where the note will land before you let go.
    • More appearance themes. The Appearance settings now include a curated set of popular light and dark looks beyond the original Zen, Mist, Midnight, and Monokai. Every preset is properly aware of light/dark mode, and switching applies instantly across the sidebar, editor, and agent panel.
    Read all the notes

    🔗 Links

    • Better link previews. When a site blocks previews or strips its title, Canto still gives you a clean, recognizable link pill instead of a broken one.
    • Edit link pills inline. Change a link's display text or URL right where it sits in the note — no separate modal dance.
    • Quieter retries. Flaky network responses are retried in the background, so previews fill in once the page actually answers.
    • Tidier link insertion. Adding a link from the modal feels a touch more polished and predictable.

    🔐 Sync

    • More reliable auto-unlock. Opening Canto on a second Mac is steadier, even when the cloud side is still catching up.
    • Cleaner reconciliation. When devices need to compare notes, Canto handles the back-and-forth with fewer false alarms.
    • Better checkpoint recovery. If a sync session is interrupted, picking up where it left off is more graceful.

    🧹 Attachments

    • Cancel actually cancels. Stopping an attachment's indexing now truly halts the in-flight work instead of letting it finish quietly in the background.
    • Honest progress. The embedding queue inspector reflects the real state of what's running, paused, or done.
    • Lighter on your Mac. Cancelling frees CPU and memory right away — most noticeable when you're juggling big PDFs or videos.

    🎨 Polish

    • Sidebar settings, repositioned. The gear in the AI island is back at a more reachable spot for thumb-and-trackpad users.

    🛠 Under the Hood

    • Added safety checks that protect link fetching and sync device handling, so the things that work today keep working tomorrow.
